Fall Music Series at Selby Gardens

(Sarasota, FL, September 29, 2010): The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens bring music back into the fresh air with its inaugural Fall Music Series featuring four entertaining options 1 pm to 3 pm, Sunday afternoons in October.

Sunday, October 10: The Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra Bring your dancing shoes! This Grammy-nominated big band is guaranteed to get your toes tapping. "Dan McMillion's sharp, swinging band represents the resurrected spirit of the late Maynard Ferguson," so says Jazz Improv critic Gary Alexander. In the 60s McMillion was playing his trumpet in the Woody Herman band and performed with them all over the world. Many of this band’s musicians are alumni of the Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and Buddy Rich bands. And the tradition continues.

Sunday, October 17: Sarasota Brass Quintet In their first Selby Gardens appearance, this outstanding group of classically-trained musicians will present a ‘Bach to Rock’ performance. The Sarasota Brass Quintet performs a wide range of selections - from classical and cutting edge music of today's leading composers to jazz and current fare. Group members are Gregory Knudsen and Andrew Kemp, trumpets, Laurence Solowey, horn, Brad Williams, trombone, and Jay Hunsberger, tuba. The concert at Selby will include works by J.S. Bach, living composers Anthony Plog and Francis Schwartz as well as Jimi Hendrix and rock band Queen.

Sunday, October 24: Antigone Now by Melissa Cooper performed by the Asolo Repertory Theatre — Set in a city still feeling the aftershocks of war, a young woman struggles to stand against the principles of an uncompromising authority, in this modern telling of Sophocles’ classic Greek Tragedy. The Antigone Now performance will be followed by live music by the Sarasota Jazz Quartet, an ensemble of musicians led by John Miller, the very popular and talented principal bass with the Sarasota Orchestra.

Sunday, October 31: Soul R Coaster performs contemporary, R&B, and soul favorites—with a cameo appearance by saxophonist Dr. Melvin Price!

Band members include Tony Rizzo - guitar vocals Mike Poncelet - keyboards Gary Sauers - drums Kali Westphalen - vocals Diana Flanders - vocals Jim Klein – bass.

The Fall Music Series attendance is free with paid admission to the Gardens; Selby Gardens Members attend at no charge. Members’ guests pay only $5. No guest passes or reciprocals and no coolers, please.
