Selby Botanical Gardens is pleased to welcome Dr. Antonio Toscano de Brito to its staff. Dr. de Brito is a widely known and respected orchid Botanist from Brazil who obtained his Ph.D. in plant systematics from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew through the University of Reading in 1994. He has collaborated for many years with local orchid botanist Dr. Carlyle Luer on pleurothallid orchid projects and most recently was a Lemann Visiting Scholar at Harvard University.
Dr. de Brito will take part in a nearly year-long Global Plants Initiative project funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Global Plant Initiative involves more than 150 institutions worldwide with the goal of digitally imaging preserved plant specimens -- specimens which are critical to the study of Earth’s biodiversity. He is also the recent recipient of a prestigious National Geographic Society Research grant. Through this grant, he will conduct a study on the orchid diversity of the rapidly disappearing Atlantic rainforests of southeastern Brazil.
