(January 5, 2009 - Sarasota, FL): Selby Gardens staff, volunteers and supporters recently gathered for a ceremony dedicating the renovated Koi Pond. Attendees included the main donors, former United Artists CEO Paula Wagner, her father Edmund J. Kauffman, Jr., and her two sisters, Susan Kunkle and Sally Hale. Wagner is the daughter of Sue Anna Kauffman, two of the Gardens first volunteers. Jane White, another early volunteer was present along with Dr. and Mrs. Carlyle Luer, Dr. and Mrs. Calaway Dodson, Pattie Clendenin, Ann Esworthy, and other longtime Selby staff members and supporters as well as Selby Board Chair Tom Luzier and several other trustees. Dr. Kiat Tan, the assistant to the Gardens’ first Director, was unable to attend but sent a letter reminiscing about Mrs. Kauffman’s passion for the Gardens.
Sue Anna Kauffman had a remarkable impact on Selby Gardens’ early development, helping to found the membership program, acting as the first editor of the Gardens’ newsletter, and getting dirt under her fingernails as well. If you haven’t seen the Koi Pond since its refurbishment, or if you have missed the wonderful antique Japanese temple bell that was just installed, please come to see them.
