February 1, 2011 — Sarasota, FL   Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is pleased to host the annual Sarasota Sumi-e Society Exhibition.  The Historic Selby House will showcase their original paintings January 29 through March 28, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.

Oriental Brush Painting is an intellectual, spiritual, as well as an artistic pursuit. It is closely related to the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy. The brush strokes used to create these painting are based upon the strokes used to produce the beautiful characters of Chinese writing. The painter’s goal is to use a few ‘free flowing’ confident strokes to produce the ‘essence’ of the landscape, the flower, or the tree, as opposed to an exact copy.  The artists have studied contemporary as well as traditional styles such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean at various Oriental Brush Painting Schools.   

The Sarasota Chapter of the Sumi-e Society of America is a non profit organization serving as a cultural bridge between Eastern and Western Art. The purpose of the Sumi-e Society is to foster and encourage the study and the appreciation of Oriental Brush Painting.
