Mother's
Day Brunch
The Gardens celebrated Mother's Day with a special brunch under
the Banyans on May 13, 2007. This event was catered by Michael’s
on East and the Venturas provided the ambiance with special music.
This was also the last of the Gardens' Music Series.
The event was a tremendous success and a sell-out. It was a
beautiful day in the Gardens and many great memories were created.
A big thank you to all of the volunteers and staff who made this
event special.

Horticulture Spotlight - Gorgeous
Amorphophallus muelleri
Flowering for the next week or so is a specimen of the aroid Amorphophallus
muelleri from Java. Unlike its infamous relative A. titanum
this species is petite and pleasant smelling. This plant can be
seen at #30 on the Selby Gardens map, near a group of Ceratozamia
cycads.
What
do new species look like?
Recently flowering in the research collection is this new, as
yet unpublished, species of Panamanian Guzmania. First
collected in 2003, it was only recently sent to Selby Gardens Bromeliad
Identification Center. This plant will not be on display this year
in the Tropical Dispaly House, as the inflorescence and a leaf have
been removed, and are being pressed and dried for the Selby Herbarium.
We did think you might enjoy seeing this beautiful bromeliad in
its flowering state.

Selby Gardens receives a 2007 Florida Native
Plant Society Conservation Award
The Florida Native Plant Society Board of Directors
awarded Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and the Institute for Regional
Conservation in Miami a $2,500 grant for a conservation project
that met the Society’s mission statement and conservation
goals.
Bruce Holst, Director of Plant Collections is pleased
to announce that this award will help protect and enhance two
rare Strap Ferns in Florida. This 2-phase project will reintroduce
two species of Florida Endangered, endemic strap fern –
the narrow strap fern (Campyloneurum angustifolium) and
tailed strap fern (C. costatum) - to Timms Hammock in
Miami-Dade County. Neither species has been observed there since
the 1930s; both species are now known from only a couple of sites
in the United States. This project is especially exciting because
it represents a partnership between Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
and the Institute for Regional Conservation with significant matching
institutional in-kind equipment and services. Spores collected
from Fakahatchee Strand will be cultured at Marie Selby to produce
a genetically diverse collection of new plants. The second phase
of the project will reintroduce the ferns to Timms Hammock.
This project reflects a significant effort by the
Gardens to preserve the native flora of Florida.
