A nature print is created by applying pigment to natural objects and transferring their images to paper, cloth, or other surfaces. The result is a unique impression. Nature printing, as evidenced by the fossilized remains of plants and animals in rock, began long before humans placed soot-covered hands on a cave wall. Plant printing flourished in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it was used to identify medicinal plants. American pioneers routinely printed unfamiliar plants on their letters home. Leaf prints were used to prevent counterfeiters from duplicating Colonial currency. In Japan, fish rubbings appeared in the 1800's as a way of preserving the memory of a record catch, using techniques that were later refined into the sophisticated art form of “Gyotaku” (print of the fish). In the 1970's nature printing was rediscovered in many parts of the world and in 1976 the Nature Printing Society was founded.
With a never-ending variety of shapes, Nature provides the inspiration for the Selby Gardens group of printers. Members, after taking classes, meet for workshops from October through March each year. The Annual Exhibit and Sale may include original & artistic prints on paper, fabric, silk, tile, wood, clay and other surfaces. Wall art, cards, books, jewelry, decorative items, linens, clothing, and other unique items will be on display and for sale.
Free with admission to Selby Gardens.
