Selby Scientist Publishes New Orchid Species: Phragmipedium manzuri

Wesley Higgins, Ph.D., Head of Systematics at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens along with Colombian botanist Paula Viveros have published a beautiful new orchid species in the scientific journal Lankesteriana. Viveros is a former Selby intern who completed a study of Colombian orchids mentored by Dr. Higgins.  This exciting discovery was made by David Manzur in the Department of Santander, Colombia.  Dr. Manzur solicited the assistance of Selby’s Orchid Identification Center to determine that his discovery was an undescribed species.  This new species is a tropical lady slipper orchid related to the North American Moccasin Flower (Cypripedium acaule).
